The first four 75th anniversary Blue Note vinyl reissues arrived the other day. I don't have the Classic pressing, but I do have an original 360 as well as the Sony 50th anniversary. But, be prepared to pay $250 for a good tape. However, the original pressings were not cut from the three track tapes. To me, it has all the characteristics of the original Columbia pressings but with more detail. The Legacy CD reissue explains that all vinyl editions play three of the five tracks at the wrong speed which had been corrected for the CD. I have been amazed by the quality of every Bernie Grundman-cut record I have heard. Regarding vinyl it is felt that the 2014 mono vinyl release is the sane way to go if you want the best sound up til the White album. It’s funny, as a young trumpet player I played along with Miles on this easy to play with LP, and never noticed a speed issue. CS 64935 is the U.S. issue, and was available as both a stereo single-layer and a stereo/multi-channel single-layer disc. Moving to the Grundman cut, and comparing "sped up apples to sped up apples" the Classic reissue more greatly resembles the original in terms of air and space and tonality than the Classic resembles the warmer, richer Mobile Fidelity reissue. 09:50
Both are wonderfully done and so very different to the point that I have to say, “It’s impossible to compare.” I just sit back and enjoy. Additionaly you need the correct EQ circuits for the right reequalisation and the right guess on the tape used. But I love LPs too and would like to get somewhat closer to the original LP than the blue vinyl mentioned above. And 0.7mil mono grooves were forced upon cutting rooms because it was easier/cheaper to have a mono adaptor plugged onto a 0.7mil stereo cutter. The UK pressings sound fine… until you compare, the US is always better. But that RSD mono reissue, If that is digital, I can't tell. A few years back, when I embarked on building a jazz collection, I won a copy of the original UK pressing on Fontana in a heavy Ebay dogfight. Wandering up to London I chanced on a copy of the CBS issue displayed on the wall, not cheap due to the record’s mythic status. Not sure if that also was a fold or some kind of separate mix. The big crossover hit of this session was undoubtedly the track The Sidewinder. I dind’t pay much for it and I don’t expect to be much worth but it would be fun to know when it actually was printed. Having this record in mono, mastered by Ryan Smith and pressed at RTI is a real treat. Anyway, it appears SACDs haven’t taken their last breathe and may indeed be around for a while. To my ear the Columbia sounds better – has more grit, sparkle and realism to it, that later reissues progressively depart from. No fiddling with the speed control. Sounds interesting. He *did* produce the 1987 remix for CD, but obviously that's something very different. I wonder what possible reason there would be for that decision? Though not expecting a separate mono mix feel I have to do this too to get it complete. The 90s Classic Records mastered by BG used original 3 track masters and cut directly to vinyl. $39.95. So Classic's two versions of Kind of Blue—one a double LP set with one LP cut at the original speed and one with the corrected speed versions of "So What", "Freddie Freeloader" and "Blue in Green" on one side and a previously unissued version of "Flamenco Sketches" (the only alternate take of any tune recorded during these sessions) presented at 45rpm on the other side, and the other a four single-sided 45rpm LP set—were cut from the three track master (or alternative master) and mixed "live" to two track, with Grundman applying the fades manually as he cut, which is how the original was produced from a two track mixdown. In the case of KOB we all know from reporting that the tape is in terrible shape, which makes the situation even more questionable. So it's important to keep in mind a few things: one is that Mobile Fidelity had to work with "the army it had", which was Battery Studios' Mark Wilder's 1997 three-to-two-track mix down to analog tape produced playing back the three track tape on a pristine all tube Presto deck and using a GML custom line mixer and producing a flat transfer at 15IPS using Dolby SR onto an Ampex ATR 102. By the way, I always wonder why 99% of my tapes on reel (I guess, I have some 400), including early mono-tapes from Furtwangler from the mid-50'a are still sounding like new without any deteroration, but all the master tapes are in bad shape? Spacious and magical is an apt description. In response to your words above, I proffer that it is been the experience of this vinyl lover that anytime a reissue label maintains radio silence about the source of their reissue it is an indication that they are embarrassed by the source itself or they are trying to pull one over on the buyer. At the end of the day I fear bottom line consideration forced Mofi into releasing this flawed reissue. I was wrong! And it's nice to know that it compares to a 1D/1D! I had actually completely forgotten all about it when I got my first real Columbia pressing but quickly remembered upon hearing the first few bars of “So What” playing back a bit too fast. The Classic's corrected speed side at 33 1/3 more closely resembles the Mo-Fi in terms of tonality but the Classic single sided 45rpm version of "Freddie Freeloader" was definitely more open, spacious and transparent than was the Mo-Fi, but given that the former was cut directly from the three track and the latter was probably from a copy of the two track mixdown (Sony/BMG does not allow original masters off the east coast so Mo-Fi probably lugged its superb Tim DeParavicini designed R2R deck to Battery and made a copy), that is not surprising.
